A fridge that stops cooling can ruin your food and your week. Here’s why it happens and when you should call a professional on Sydney’s North Shore and Northern Beaches.
Why Your Fridge Isn’t Cooling Properly – Common Causes We Fix on the North Shore
A refrigerator that isn’t cooling properly is one of the most stressful appliance problems. Food starts spoiling, ice cream melts, and the whole household feels it. At Appliance Repairs Clinic, we see this issue almost every day across the North Shore and Northern Beaches.
Here are the most common reasons your fridge stops cooling — and what usually needs to be done.
1. Dirty Condenser Coils
Dust and pet hair build up on the condenser coils at the back or underneath the fridge. When the coils get clogged, the fridge can’t release heat properly and stops cooling efficiently.
This is one of the easiest fixes, but many people don’t realise it’s the cause until a technician checks it.
2. Faulty Evaporator Fan
The evaporator fan circulates cold air inside the fridge and freezer. If the fan motor fails or the blades get blocked by ice, cold air stops circulating and the temperature rises.
You’ll often notice the freezer is still cold while the fridge section is warm.
3. Defrost System Problems
Modern fridges have an automatic defrost system. If the defrost heater, thermostat or timer fails, ice builds up on the evaporator coils and blocks airflow.
This is a very common issue on many Samsung, LG and Westinghouse models we repair.
4. Worn Door Seals
Damaged or dirty door gaskets allow warm air to enter the fridge. The compressor works overtime trying to keep the temperature down, and eventually the unit struggles to cool properly.
A simple seal replacement can often solve the problem and improve energy efficiency.
5. Compressor or Start Relay Failure
The compressor is the heart of the fridge. When it fails, or when the start relay stops working, the fridge loses almost all cooling ability.
This is a more serious repair, but in many cases the unit can still be saved with the right parts and expertise.
When Should You Call a Technician?
If you’ve checked that the temperature settings are correct, the vents inside are not blocked, and the fridge has space around it for airflow, but it’s still not cooling properly, it’s time to call a professional.
At Appliance Repairs Clinic we diagnose and repair all major fridge brands. Our technicians carry common spare parts so most repairs are completed on the first visit across Mosman, Manly, Neutral Bay, Dee Why and surrounding suburbs.
